Maintaining Your Dog’s Training
Training your dog is a big step, but what you do after training matters just as much. At Unleashed K9, we focus not just on teaching your dog commands, but also on preparing both of you for long-term success. Here are some dog training tips we always recommend our dog owners to practice, so that they reinforce what their dog has learned in training.
Reinforce training at home every day
Once your dog completes their training with us, the work isn’t over. Dogs thrive with structure and repetition, so it’s important to keep practicing at home. Set aside a few minutes each day to work on basic commands that your trainer has given you; like sit, stay, heel, and place. Practice in different areas of your home and outside, just like we do in training. This helps your dog understand that obedience doesn’t just apply in one place.
Stay consistent
Maintaining trained dog behaviors comes down to consistency. That means using the same words, the same tone of voice, and the same expectations every time you interact with your dog. It also means not letting things slide just because you’re tired or in a rush. The more consistent you are, the more reliable your dog will be.
Will the training transfer to you?
One of the most common questions we get is, “Will the training transfer to me?” The short answer is yes, but it does take effort on your part. Our program is designed to prepare your dog to listen to you, but you’ll need to follow through. We teach you how to use the same techniques we do, and we’re always here to support you with follow-up sessions or advice. The more you practice and stay involved, the better the results will be.
Real World Training
At Unleashed K9, we do more than teach commands. We proof behaviors in the real world, taking dogs to busy parks, city sidewalks, and stores around Minneapolis. Kenneth even brings dogs home with him at night to his private house, creating an environment where they learn to behave in everyday life. Dogs also work with both male and female trainers to help them generalize their obedience, no matter who’s giving the command.
Keep building the bond
Continuing dog obedience training strengthens the bond between you and your dog. It shows your dog that you’re a strong, reliable leader and helps them feel secure. Remember that training isn’t just about rules. It’s also about communication and trust. The more you work together, the better your relationship will become.
Your dog’s training doesn’t end when they leave Unleashed K9. In many ways, it’s just the beginning. With daily practice, consistent follow-through, and the right mindset, you can maintain everything your dog has learned and continue building on it for years to come. If you ever need help, our team is here to support you with ongoing guidance and training.
